This program is designed to help participants deal with chronic conditions. Topics include: techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, appropriate use of medications, communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, nutrition, and how to evaluate new treatments.

This class is created in partnership with MaineGeneral's Peter Alfond Prevention & Healthy Living Center. Class materials will be mailed to participants in advance of the class. The class meets weekly for 6 weeks. Each week registrants will participate in a small group discussion by phone. The class leader will call participants 2 weeks before the class starts to confirm registration. Living Well with Diabetes is designed to help people with type 2 diabetes learn how to live well. Topics include: techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, depression, anger, fear and frustration; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating, appropriate use of medication; and working with healthcare providers.

This class is created in partnership with MaineGeneral's Peter Alfond Prevention & Healthy Living Center. Class materials will be mailed to participants in advance of the class. Tai Chi is an enjoyable exercise that can improve balance, relieve pain, and improve health and ability to do things. It is a slow exercise. It is easy to learn and good for all ability levels. The essential principles of Tai Chi include mind and body integration, fluid movements, controlled breathing and mental concentration. Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for the health of mind and body. It helps people to relax and feel better.

Please register through the MSAD 54 Adult and Community Education Program (207)474-7553 and contact the Registration contact for any questions. This program is part of Dr. Paul Lam's Tai Chi for Arthritis Program using the Step Wise Method and is great for those interested in Tai Chi and who may have never taken Tai Chi before.

A Matter of Balance emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

This program was designed for family caregivers of people with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), dementia, and/or any other condition that affects memory. Topics include: caregiver stress, dealing with difficult care partner behavior, finding help, making decisions about treatment, housing, etc., communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, dealing with caregiver and care partner difficult emotions, planning for future needs, and legal issues related to caregiving. Program participants make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program.

Tirbal community preference. Outside community will be scheduled as space permits. Classes will be held at the Mi'kmaq Nation gymnasium located at the back of 56 Micmac Drive in Presque Isle. If you drive to the end of Northern drive the parking lot will be on your right.
